Thing # 10- what a joke!

I tried every way I knew to access Picassa to download one of my greyhound pictures to add comments to and to no avail, could I access it! Plus, I could find no way or have the hours needed to find a way! I can say though, that one of my yoga teachers sent a really funny thing he made from using these resources! If I am able to access it to attach to this blog entry then I will. There is really nothing fun about struggling with some of the "discovery" things!

thing #9

Well, I made notes for this post so I am going to complete it:I've decided to take a different approach but it feels like having 500 pairs of shoes for what? They all can't be worn at the same time? Library 23 things would be great for certain people, will I ever be able to use all of it requires to gain knowledge of? It all has to be "edited" into usable bites...Cool Cat/create a circle of... very interesting! Good for Her! She's right you know! We all, as educators, develop ways to "take in " info we need. Individualism is also key to learning styles. Edublog's award winning, How interesting- look at the votes various blog types received! I guess that is important if you get into "competition"! Libraries- followed informancy- good job of librarians in Col! I don't find any of them easy, I watched the tutorial 5times! Didn't motivate me to locate any or watch or access RSS! Looked at atomic learning- it would not be possible to implement with my students- Good for me when I need to learn something. None were easy for me! Plain Google Search satisfy's my needs. Confusing having to process ton of technical jargon and seeing how it would work with 6/7/8th grade 2nd year in the US students could be taught so they do something different. Feed icons- cute, clever, when needed!

Thing # 8

Thing # 8- my last post! So I am not finishing the 23 things! I don't like RSS or rather I don't want to partcipate in the NewsReader, either. I won't be able to use it cause it is not a pleasurable way for me to read. With my students lack of English language, it would not be useful, either. I am not sure about libraries cause I am not a librarian! Sharing with people I don't know means nothing to me. I have no real desire to delve into others personal lives and thoughts if they aren't close friends. That is best done through one-on-one communication. When I have a need for information I will know what direction to take, but to randomly be attempting to get information about something that I may or may not be able to use, is a misuse of my time. Outside of school my live involves taking care of and training my dogs, my home, and yard and family and friends. Interaction with them doesn't involve the impersonal computer for the most part. I don 't want a lot of public exposure through the computer. If I was pursuing a doctoral degree, I can see where this work would be most useful. It would definitely save gas for going to the library for research. I did look at library tweeter and RCE musings. Library tweeter seemed to be a good source for book information for students. RCE musings seems to be a good idea for a class posting project. To learn to do that should be set up for a project workshop for like 3 hours of education and be done with it. Spending way more than 81 hours for 18 hours of credit seems unbalanced! This is when I would rather have a teacher!

Thing # 7

Thing #7 - I am creating a google doc to experience using it! I have a question? Wouldn't slang language be related to neologism ? I downloaded pictures from my computer into Picasa. But, when trying to get a blog attached to one I couldn't get it to work. So I went about it differently! Created my igoogle homepage and added the moon phases, to do list, places to see before die, and maps and other things. I think that students might be able to do some of this for learning and creating documents. I am concerned that the amount of time being spent to attempt to learn of all this different web things is large compared to what I can actually impart to students in their second year and still haven't learned very much about computers or processing.

Thing # 6 1/2 - learning something new!

Okay, I learned to import a picture that I was trying to do a posting with! This is an image that I put together for getting students connected to the literature we will be reading. The outcome of a person that has struggled, hopefully, surviving and becoming a strong-willed, dreamer!

Thing # 6- Mashups/3rdparties...

This is computer Monday! So I have spent some time here! Wow Mappr is incredible with pics along the way. I got to Flickr services so that is bookmarked for future play & discovery. Flickr Vision was amazing with pics being posted within moments & from all over the globe, although, I am not so sure of the usefulness. Reading about mashups was rather frustrating, though. I looked at the tutorials for mashups through IBM. Since working through Flickr makes all possible through their services. I signed up for Google Picasa & all my pics were imported & there for using. I think that through Big Hugh Labs, using Custom Mosiacs would be a good way to introduce theme reading, with Map Maker, I think it would be useful for introducing literature and authors through location. Having students make a Magazine cover or Movie Poster would be a good completion of book reading project. A Motivator Project might be a good advice project for students coming the next year. This is so much technical information to process & editing it in my head for usefulness with students that are in the 2nd year of being in the US. I know that the first year teacher is doing the 23 Library things and we are going to need to collaborate and we can create some very useful approaches to incorporating this with our students. I am somewhat concerned with the amount of storage possibilities of these laptops, and some of the information I wanted to look at wanted an updated browser of 7+IE, Firefox, or Safari!

Finish of Thing #5

The reading that stated, "participatory learning by capitalizing on...digital cameras and student's desire to share their creative work...By introducing...users to social and collaborative technologies" best summarizes how I think it would be a valuable to use with the students.

Thing #5-Flirkr reflections...

I found that reading about Flickr was a lot of information to take in and have gone back to reread about 4 times. Even with making notes, it was still so much technical info that only through trying to set up an account and getting to work on it, will help me. So, I did. I set up a MsLyonsESL account. But I am not so sure about what to do from there. I want to start it for my classes this next school year. I will want it to be private, for my students to post pictures and make comments. I know they are obsessed with pictures of friends and families and that could be a good way to work with communicating in English.
We worked with Flickr at the 21st Century workshop as a resource for pictures that are "open" for use because Google's pictures are not necessarily the best way to go. We don't want to violate copywrites. So, I know that using it for picture prompts would be a good source.
Tags should help them with creating "associations and connections between photos and users of the site."
I will want to make the situation a "private" one for the safety of the students and I would have to see how they would feel about it being a "public" situation. They will definitely learn to use the libraries.
I am not sure I quite understand what "taxonomy or folksonomy" means without looking it up in the dictionary! Oh, a science or classification, why not just say that! Catagory!
This information said it all for my feelings, (from the reading)

Okay, the first one is the number one...

and thing 1 and should be 2. Thing 2 should one should be the 3rd one and Thing 4 is thing 4! Confused, you should have been the one to straighten it out!

Thing #4- Oh my God!

I finally wrote the i!
I thought I would never get the avatar in, until I wrote down the instructions! I have been dealing with this process and problem solving (with no resolution for copying a personal (an exercise class I use to teach)dvd (that was copied from a vcr to dvd-there has to be something that I am missing) and setting up switching electric companies since my current contract is up on July 3 and is going from 13.5 to 20.8!
I think my concern about using something like this with the students is:
1. If I don't have clear step by step with pictures so that it flows for me to process, it is going to be very difficult to extract to 2nd year in the US students without the funds to have computers at home, and few have had any experience on the computer to begin with.
2. If they have to much choice for doing something, they take forever!

On the other hand, if a class blog could be started, it could possibly help them with writing and reading skills. The difficult part would be how limited they are with language and we keep seeing the same words used over and over!

Signing up isn't so hard!

Thing #2

I have watched the video of Covey's Habits....Easiest is considering problems as challenges-usually! The hardest is play because I like to be productive while playing!

thing 1 was actually the first post

Okay, I have read the first thing and posted and now I am doing it again!

I am trying...

Okay, I am beginning to work through this experience! New adventure! I am curious as to how I will implement this with my students to increase their educational literacy!
Onward and upward....
